FT:  Olympique Marseille 0-3 Atletico Madrid
Antoine Griezmann scored twice as Atletico Madrid swept aside Marseille in Lyon to win the Europa League for the third time in nine years.

France forward Griezmann opened the scoring by punishing Andre Zambo Anguissa's poor touch to coolly slot home, then casually dinked in a second.

Captain Gabi drilled in the third goal late on as Atletico again lifted the trophy they also won in 2010 and 2012.

The outcome could have been different had Marseille forward Valere Germain taken an early chance, before Griezmann's lethal finishing allowed Atletico to take control.

Marseille skipper Dimitri Payet, an injury doubt before the game, lasted just half an hour before hobbling off in tears.

Without their inspirational midfielder, the French side caused Atletico just one major scare as ex-Fulham striker Kostas Mitroglou headed against the post.

Atletico have been one of Europe's most consistent teams in recent seasons, breaking Barcelona and Real Madrid's stranglehold on La Liga by claiming the title in 2013-14.

Second in the Spanish top flight with one match remaining, they are on course for a top-three finish for the sixth straight season and have appeared in two Champions League finals in that period, losing on both occasions to city rivals Real.

With manager Diego Simeone in the stands - serving a four-game ban for being sent off in the semi-final against Arsenal - Atletico repelled Marseille's early thrusts and produced a performance which has become a trademark under the Argentine.

Griezmann's clinical double took his tally for the club this season to 30 before Gabi added the third as the Ligue 1 club tried in vain to breach a backline that has conceded just 33 goals in 58 games all campaign.

"I am very happy," said Griezmann.

"I have been working to experience such a moment for many years. I left home when I was 14 for that. We will celebrate. My family is here.

"I don't know how to describe the finish, perhaps cold-blooded."

Atletico conclude their league season against Eibar on Sunday, and it remains to be seen if that is Griezmann's last game for the club as he has been heavily linked with Barcelona.

Payet has been Marseille's star man this season - his 22 assists in all competitions the most by any player in Europe's top five leagues.

The former West Ham midfielder was struggling with a thigh problem before the game and, despite being passed fit, crumpled down in the opening period and was clearly devastated as he made his way off the pitch.

France boss Didier Deschamps names his 23-man squad for the World Cup on Thursday, and Payet will be left wondering whether he will be fit.

It was his clever through ball in the sixth minute that set Germain in on goal, but the striker struck horribly wide from 10 yards out.

Former Aston Villa full-back Jordan Amavi struck a fizzing drive straight at goalkeeper Jan Oblak late on as Marseille lost their third final in this competition - twice under its previous guise as the Uefa Cup.

Defender Adil Rami said: "The final step was too far for us but we fought for everything.

"We lacked experience. Against such a team you should not try to play football. You need to knock it long and high and win second balls.

"When you try to play and lose the ball against them, that is when you are in trouble."

Man of the match - Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid)

Griezmann's goals settled the match, and the Frenchman got to showcase his Fortnite-inspired celebration

French hoodoo continues - the stats
  • Atletico have won the Europa League three times, the joint-most with Sevilla since the competition's inaugural season in 2009-10.
  • Marseille have lost each of their past three major finals in European competition, without scoring a single goal. All have been in the Uefa Cup/Europa League.
  • In major European finals, French sides have now lost all five of their encounters with Spanish opposition, with Marseille accounting for the past two.
  • Since the beginning of the 2013-14 season, Spanish clubs have won eight of the past nine Champions League and Europa League trophies combined - Manchester United in this competition last season being the exception.
  • Simeone has become just the second manager to lift the Europa League on more than one occasion, after Unai Emery (3).
  • Koke now has five assists for Atletico in the Europa League - only Diego (8) has more for the club since the competition began in 2009-10.
  • Griezmann has been directly involved in 12 goals in European competition this season (eight goals, four assists).
  • Griezmann has been directly involved in 45% of the 94 goals (29 goals, 13 assists) that Atletico have scored in all competitions this season.
  • Oblak has registered seven clean sheets in European competition this season, more than any other goalkeeper in the Champions League or Europa League.

Arsenal 1-1 Atletico Madrid

With the Gunners 1-0 up against ten-man Atletico they left themselves embarrassingly exposed as they hungrily went in search of a second.

A punt downfield in the 82nd minute from centreback Jose Maria Gimenez and super-striker Antoine Griezmann was away.

Then it was the turn of Arsenal’s defensive pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi to do their comedy double act routine.

Koscielny, in attempting to clear, kicked the ball against his own head and put Griezmann away.

David Ospina did well to block his shot but the ball bounced back to the Frenchman.

Mustafi looked like he might deny Griezmann, but he slipped over and the Atletico ace was able to lift the ball into the net.

It was ‘deja vu’ for Wenger, no doubt bringing back memories of how, in desperately chasing for an equaliser against Monaco - even though there was still an away leg to come - in the Champions League they left themselves totally open.

It led to them conceding a last-ditch third goal to lose 3-1 in 2015.

Few Arsenal fans will be expecting Champions League action again next season now.

Winning the Europa League would have ensured that, but the Madrid side are hot favourites to progress through to the May 16 final.

They will surely not have to play the second-leg with ten men for 80 minutes. That’s what they had to do after having Sime Vrsaljko sent off for two early cautions.

Diego Costa, who terrorised the Arsenal defence while at Chelsea, will be fit to start and the Spanish aces haven’t conceded a goal at their new stadium for 11 games.

Up until the Griezmann goal it was looking like Wenger’s 22-year reign could end on a happy note.

Wenger admitted when he signed Lacazette in the summer it was a struggle luring him away from Lyon, the place of his birth.

In the 61st minute the £46.5m striker showed just how determined he was to return to the French city

Nacho Monreal's opener against Ostersunds FK meant he has been directly
involved in five goals in his last six games for Arsenal in all competitions

Arsenal as good as guaranteed their place in the last 16 of the Europa League with a comfortable away win over Swedish side Ostersunds FK.

Gunners left-back Nacho Monreal scored from close range when Ostersund goalkeeper Aly Keita fumbled Alex Iwobi's strike.

Then the home side's centre-back Sotirios Papagiannopoulos diverted Henrikh Mkhitaryan's cross into his own net after the Armenian seized on a loose pass.

Ostersund improved after the break but any revival was ended by Mesut Ozil, who made a well-timed run into the area and squeezed his shot past Keita for the third, before the hosts had a late penalty saved.

The Swedish club's English manager Graham Potter, who has led them to three promotions since 2010, could at least reflect on a bright performance from striker Saman Ghoddos.

The Iran international forced Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina into a couple of saves and led the line with pace and determination.

Arsenal host the second leg of the last-32 tie at Emirates Stadium next Thursday (20:05 GMT).

Chelsea have been drawn against Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League, while Tottenham will face Italian champions Juventus.

Premier League leaders Manchester City will play Switzerland's Basel, Manchester United face La Liga side Sevilla and Liverpool take on Portugal's Porto.

Holders Real Madrid will face Paris St-Germain.

A record five English teams progressed from the group stage this season.

Chelsea were the only English team to make it through as runners-up, with the other four sides all topping their respective groups.

The Blues have arguably been handed the most difficult tie, and it comes days after boss Antonio Conte conceded that their Premier League title defence was over following their defeat by West Ham, which left them 14 points adrift of Manchester City.

However, Chelsea did beat Barcelona in the semi-finals before lifting the Champions League trophy in 2012.

Real Madrid, who are aiming for a 13th title and third in a row, were given a tough draw against big-spending PSG after finishing behind Tottenham in Group H.

The group winners will be away in the round of 16 first legs on 13/14 and 20/21 February, and at home in the return matches on 6/7 and 13/14 March.

The final will take place in Kiev on 26 May.

Champions League last-16 draw
