Riyad Mahrez's 12th goal of the season sealed the win for Leicester against 10-man Arsenal


Leicester earned a first Premier League win over Arsenal since 1994 as Arsene Wenger's penultimate game in charge of the Gunners ended in another away defeat.

Kelechi Iheanacho rifled the opener past Petr Cech after poor defending from the visitors, who had 20-year-old defender Konstantinos Mavropanos sent off 92 seconds later for hauling down the forward as he broke through on goal.

Arsenal levelled through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but Jamie Vardy's penalty, awarded after Henrikh Mkhitaryan brought down Demarai Gray, and Riyad Mahrez's late breakaway goal sealed victory for the hosts.

Arsenal remain the only side without an away point in English league football in 2018, while victory for the Foxes means they could still overhaul Everton for eighth place with victory over Tottenham on the final day.

Vardy's penalty means he has now scored six goals in seven Premier League games against the Gunners, who have lost seven consecutive top-flight away matches for the first time since 1966.

In the final minutes Arsenal fans chanted Wenger's name and were joined by the home supporters, many of whom stood to applaud the Frenchman.

Before the match, Foxes manager Claude Puel had called on his side to "be positive, play with quality, tempo and desire" - and they duly responded.

The Frenchman has been under pressure in recent weeks and received a vote of confidence from the club's board last Friday, but on this evidence he certainly appears to have his players' backing.
Fousseni Diabate and Mahrez provided constant threat down the flanks, and an attack force of Vardy and Iheanacho had Arsenal's inexperienced backline constantly troubled.

Puel played under Wenger at Monaco in the 1980s and 1990s, and the Arsenal boss praised his tenacity before the match.

"He can fight," said Wenger. "I had him as a player and that was the same and I'm sure he can turn it around very quickly."

Wenger presumably hoped Puel would have waited one more game to get it right.

While this was a good night for Puel, who insists a mid-table finish is acceptable, he surely faces another challenge once the campaign ends, with the future of Mahrez certain to be on the agenda.


If he can retain the services of the Algerian, who has put in two transfer requests in the last two windows, and get consistent performances out of players like Iheanacho, then the champions of 2016 have reasons for optimism heading into a new season.

Leicester's Daniel Amartey is expected to be unavailable for the visit of Chelsea as he continues his recovery from a hamstring problem.


The Foxes, who spent four days training in Spain this week, could be unchanged from last weekend's win at West Brom.

Chelsea are again without David Luiz and Ross Barkley because of respective ankle and hamstring problems.

Manager Antonio Conte has declined to say whether Willy Caballero or Thibaut Courtois will play in goal.

Caballero has started the Blues' four FA Cup games this season, conceding just one goal.

First-choice goalkeeper Courtois played in the FA Cup from the quarter-final onwards last season, but the Belgian conceded two goals between his legs in Wednesday's defeat by Barcelona.

Leicester can "move on" from the Riyad Mahrez transfer saga after the Algerian helped them reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, says manager Claude Puel.

Mahrez, who was back in the side after missing 10 days of training when a proposed move to Manchester City did not materialise, set up Jamie Vardy's goal in a 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

He left the field to a standing ovation when replaced by Matty James in added time.

"The most important thing in the game was the fans supported Riyad, and when I replaced him it was a good feeling with the fans," said Puel.

"It's important to stay united about this.
"The situation is behind us, it's important to look forward. Now we have two home games in the Premier League and it's important to get the support of the fans."

Leicester had to work hard to break down a well-drilled Blades defence, and the Championship visitors went close through Enda Stevens and George Baldock.

But their Premier League hosts dominated possession, and Vardy had a second effort ruled out for offside.

Leicester, who are now unbeaten in seven home games, always looked most likely to score first, but only kept their advantage thanks to Kasper Schmeichel's fine diving save from Baldock.

The Foxes will discover their last-eight opponents on Saturday at 20:00 GMT.

Sergio Aguero extended his own record to 197 goals for Manchester City


Sergio Aguero scored four goals as Manchester City opened up a 16 point advantage at the top of the Premier League with victory over Leicester City.

Argentine striker Aguero netted all his goals in a devastating second half showing - twice finishing from Kevin de Bruyne's perfect passes, punishing a Kasper Schmeichel error by chipping into the net and curling in a sublime fourth.

Pep Guardiola's side took just three minutes to open the scoring at Etihad Stadium as winger Raheem Sterling stroked in his 20th goal of the season from a De Bruyne through ball.



Leicester had levelled in the game when Jamie Vardy picked up Kyle Walker's wayward pass and converted with a clever run and finish, but it proved to be only one of two shots on target in the contest.

One positive for the Foxes was the return of winger Riyad Mahrez, who played just under half an hour in place of Fousseni Diabate. The Algerian saw a deadline day move to the opposing side fall through and he only returned to training with the club on Friday.

Manchester United will have the opportunity to cut the deficit on their rivals once again when they travel to Newcastle United on Sunday (kick-off 14:15 GMT).

Kelechi Iheanacho now has nine goals in nine games in the FA Cup


Leicester City cruised into the FA Cup fifth round after a Kelechi Iheanacho-inspired rout of League One Peterborough United.

The Nigerian seized on a misplaced pass to net his first before volleying home Christian Fuch's pinpoint cross.




Malian forward Fousseni Diabate also scored twice on his Foxes debut, as the Foxes made it six games unbeaten.

Posh's Andrew Hughes scored after the break to make 3-1 but Diabate got his second and Wilfred Ndidi added a fifth.

Jamie Vardy scored his tenth Premier League goal of the season to set Leicester on their way to victory


Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez both scored as Leicester beat Watford to continue the visitors' poor run.

Watford have now won just one of their last 11 Premier League matches, while Leicester improve to two wins from seven in the league and move up to seventh place in the table.

Vardy scored from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the area by Watford defender Molla Wague.

The England striker got to his feet and rifled the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Mahrez then made sure of victory with a goal in the closing stages.

Substitute Adrien Silva played it to him on the left-hand side and Mahrez finished with his left foot from a tight angle.

The Algerian could have gone down looking for a penalty under a challenge from Christian Kabasele but he stayed on his feet to score his fifth goal in his last five appearances against Watford.

Watford thought they had gone ahead in the first half but Troy Deeney's goal was ruled out for offside.

Vardy plays key role in Watford's downfall

Leicester manager Claude Puel had complained ahead of the game that he has too many strikers to choose from but there is no doubt who remains his number one.

Vardy broke the deadlock and his pace was a constant threat to Watford's defence.

Wague, who brought Vardy down for the penalty, was substituted in the second half after he appeared to pull his hamstring when chasing the England striker.

Prior to scoring his goal, Vardy had the best chance of the first half when Shinji Okazaki played him through and he was too strong for Wague, forcing a good save from Orestis Karnezis.

Vardy was nudged in the area by Kabasele in the second half as Watford struggled to cope with him and he also hit the post after being flagged for offside.

Kelechi Iheanacho became the first player in English football to score a goal after VAR intervention

Kelechi Iheanacho became the first player to score a goal awarded by a video assistant referee in English football as Leicester beat Fleetwood in an FA Cup third-round replay.

Iheanacho opened the scoring - with a routine strike - from Islam Slimani's pass.

The big talking point of the game came when the former Manchester City striker initially had a goal disallowed for offside from Riyad Mahrez's through ball.

But referee Jonathan Moss liaised with video official Mike Jones, who told him Nathan Pond's trailing foot was keeping Iheanacho onside, and the goal was awarded 67 seconds after it hit the back of the net.

The victory earned Leicester a tie at Peterborough in the next round.

Leicester striker Jamie Vardy, who missed the 0-0 draw in the initial tie, came on late on to face his former club, who are mid-table in League One.

Nigeria striker Iheanacho, 21, has been disappointing since his £25m summer move from Manchester City.

He has not had many chances - only playing a total of 403 minutes before the game against Fleetwood, but he has rarely impressed during that time - one goal against Leeds in the EFL Cup in October aside.

But he did a good job against Fleetwood, opening the scoring with their first shot of the whole tie after converting a pass from fellow bit-part big-money forward Slimani.

He then played in Slimani with a good ball over the top, but the Algerian - who did not look impressed to be replaced after 55 minutes - volleyed wide.

Iheanacho did well for his historic goal, when he ran on to captain-for-the-day Mahrez's through ball before clipping the ball over keeper Chris Neal.

Fleetwood played their part in the first half, with Ashley Hunter forcing a diving save from Eldin Jakupovic and Conor McAleny going close on several occasions.

But in the end the quality of Iheanacho was too much for them.

Iheanacho's second goal of the night will go down in the history books with the striker becoming the first player in English football to score a goal via a VAR decision.

In the end, it was quite a comfortable night for Claude Puel's side but only after the intervention of VAR. Iheanacho was the beneficiary and it capped an excellent night for the former Manchester City striker, who scored his second and third goals for the club.

Ten-man Leicester produced an outstanding display to earn a point at third-placed Chelsea - although they should probably have come away from Stamford Bridge with all three.

The Foxes dominated possession for large periods and created the better chances but had the sting taken out of their display when defender Ben Chilwell received two yellow cards in the space of five second-half minutes. He was shown no mercy by referee Mike Jones in the 68th minute when he brought down Victor Moses, shortly after fouling Willian.

Claude Puel's side went close twice through Jamie Vardy, while Wilfred Ndidi's header was acrobatically pushed away by Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea looked leggy and short of ideas. Cesc Fabregas had two good efforts - twice testing Kasper Schmeichel - and seconds from the end the Danish keeper pushed away a free-kick from Marcos Alonso.

The Blues are now level on points with second-placed Manchester United, who play on Monday.

Leicester have 31 points and remain in eighth.

Foxes' good work undone by Chilwell red

It was the generally more timid of the two managers who got their side to play the more exhilarating football at Stamford Bridge.

Puel's side harried the Blues from the first whistle, and should have scored at least once from one of their three chances in the 10th minute.

England striker Vardy, fit again after a groin problem, found the side-netting and fired just wide, while Shinji Okazaki also missed narrowly after more initial good work by Vardy.

Riyad Mahrez has been the subject of rumours linking him to Liverpool and Arsenal, but today his mind was clearly on the matter in hand. He was exceptional in midfield and found Vardy twice with two exquisite passes, only for the striker to miss the target with one strike and see another blocked by Gary Cahill.

The Foxes looked set to turn the screw midway through the second half, but had to change their gameplan when England Under-21 defender Chilwell was sent off for a second bookable offence.


Nevertheless, the defence continued to look comfortable against a Chelsea attack bereft of ideas. The only time Schmeichel was severely tested was moments before the final whistle when he tipped Alonso's low free-kick around the post.

Hunter hit the woodwork with Fleetwood's final chance of the game

League One Fleetwood held Leicester City to a goalless draw at Highbury in the FA Cup third round to earn a replay at the King Power Stadium.

Ex-Fleetwood striker Jamie Vardy was left out of the Leicester squad by manager Claude Puel having failed to recover fully from a groin injury.

The Premier League side did not manage a shot on target in his absence and withstood huge pressure from the hosts.

Ashley Hunter was denied a late winner when his deflected shot hit the post.

Fleetwood have never progressed beyond the third round of the competition.



No fairytale return for Vardy

When the two clubs met in this season's EFL Trophy, with Fleetwood beating Leicester's under-23 side 3-0, the game was watched by just 517 fans.

Saturday's FA Cup tie at Highbury drew a packed crowd of 5,001 - but having been billed as the 'Vardy derby', the 30-year-old England striker ended up watching from the stands - and the game suffered as a consequence.

Vardy scored 34 goals in the 2011-12 season as Fleetwood won the Conference title, but Foxes manager Claude Puel chose "not to risk" him in a seemingly routine third-round tie against lower-league opposition.

Puel made eight changes to the team who beat Huddersfield 3-0 on New Year's Day, but his side lacked pace and quality against a well-drilled home side.

Islam Slimani was given the nod at centre-forward with summer signing Kelechi Iheanacho, who has scored just three goals in 11 appearances since joining from Manchester City, left on the bench.

And Algeria international Slimani had just 24 touches on a frustrating afternoon before being replaced by Iheanacho.

Puel had been warned - Leicester were knocked out by League One opposition last season, losing 1-0 away to Millwall in the fifth round.

Riyad Mahrez's eighth goal of the season sent the Foxes on their way

Riyad Mahrez scored one and made one to ensure Leicester broke a run of five games without a win with a deserved victory over Huddersfield.

The Algerian expertly guided home a side-foot volley from Marc Albrighton's up-and-under into the box to open the scoring after a dull first half.

Seven minutes later he set up Islam Slimani with a precise though-ball and his countryman dinked a cool finish over Jonas Lossl.

Huddersfield rarely threatened, with wayward shots from Tom Ince and Collin Quaner the closest they came to a reply.

Instead the late stages were notable for Leicester midfielder Adrien Silva making his debut off the bench - four months after late submission of paperwork for his move from Sporting Lisbon left him unable to play - and Albrighton's injury-time third from Demarai Gray's deflected cross.



Mahrez moments of magic light up match

While still short of the stratospheric standards set during Leicester's 2015-16 title win, this season's version of Mahrez has been a significant upgrade on the pallid variety seen last term.

Mahrez was subject of a bid by Roma in the summer

His goal was a superb demonstration of his technical ability, coolly steering an awkward dropping ball into the far corner from a tight angle.

Mahrez's pass for Slimani's strike was made easier by the Huddersfield defence's kamikaze high line, but was perfectly weighted to send the striker clear of the chasing Terriers.

Seven goals and seven assists in the Premier League this season dwarf his respective totals - six and three - for the whole of 2016-17.

His upturn in form has been appreciated by the King Power crowd who gave him a standing ovations as he departed in the 77th minute.

But it has also been noted elsewhere, with Arsenal among several clubs whose reported interest will be strengthened by this performance.

Mohamed Salah has scored 17 goals in the Premier League so far this season - just one less than Harry Kane.

Manager Jurgen Klopp called Liverpool's reaction to going a goal down against Leicester the "best I've ever seen" after Mohamed Salah's double helped them come from behind to win at Anfield.

Jamie Vardy gave the visitors an early lead when he poked home from a Riyad Mahrez pass before Salah equalised in the second half.

The Egypt international then turned Harry Maguire on the edge of the area before firing in his second of the day - and 17th Premier League goal of the season - to give Liverpool the lead.

Klopp described the hosts' performance as "perfect" and the Reds, who will finish the year in fourth place, extended their unbeaten run to 15 games.

Leicester stay in eighth but have now gone five games without a victory.

"On perfect days we win football games," said Klopp.

"The crowd were unbelievable and we needed them today to score these two goals. It's a good team performance and a well-deserved win."

The only concern will surround the fitness of match-winner Salah, who Klopp said was "limping" when he was substituted with less than 10 minutes left to play.

"We have to check it," added the German. "We tried to change it as quick as possible and of course that is not too good."

Watford's winner was credited as a Kasper Schmeichel own goal

Watford ended a six-game winless run by coming from behind to beat Leicester City.

Riyad Mahrez headed the Foxes, now without a win in four games, into the lead from Marc Albrighton's cross.

But Molla Wague equalised on his first Premier League start, against his former club, from close range and Richarlison then hit the post towards the end of the first half.

The Hornets' winner was a Kasper Schmeichel own goal as the keeper, while trying to keep Abdoulaye Doucoure's shot from a tight angle out of his goal, inadvertently turned it past his own line.
Heurelho Gomes made two excellent late saves to seal the win for Watford, from Wes Morgan's close-range effort and Leonardo Ulloa's header.

Watford end miserable run

Watford - without a win in over a month and with just one point from their last six games - looked as if they were going to endure a miserable Boxing Day when they trailed to Mahrez's header.

But to their credit, and boss Marco Silva's delight, they showed great character to come back.

Some Leicester fans could almost be excused for not remembering Mali defender Wague, who had a one-game loan spell with the club last season. But they will remember him now, as he pounced late in the first half after the Foxes failed to clear a corner.

That goal lifted Watford, who had been below-par - or based on recent form, maybe playing at par. And Richarlison smashed the ball off the post two minutes later from Tom Cleverley's pass.

They continued that momentum into the second half. Cleverley's deep free-kick found Doucoure, who tried to beat Schmeichel at his near post from close to the byline. The ball might have been going across the goal when Schmeichel touched the ball past the line, with Ben Chilwell clearing from just behind the line.

Watford were indebted to their keeper, Gomes, for the win when he denied Morgan and Ulloa late on.

Harry Maguire has scored twice for Leicester this season

Jose Mourinho criticised Manchester United's "childish" errors as his team fell further behind leaders Manchester City after conceding a 94th-minute equaliser from Harry Maguire at 10-man Leicester.

The Portuguese felt his side missed "joke chances" as they fell 13 points behind City - the biggest points gap between first and second place at Christmas in English top-flight history.

It was the second time in a week that United have conceded a goal in injury time, losing 2-1 to Championship side Bristol City in the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

United had looked set to take all three points after Juan Mata's double had seen them recover from Jamie Vardy's opener, while Foxes substitute Daniel Amartey was sent off for the home side 16 minutes and nine seconds after coming for two bookings in four minutes.

Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard were particularly guilty of missing golden opportunities in the second half to put the game beyond Leicester.

Maguire caught the United defence out as they failed to deal with Marc Albrighton's deep cross into the box, the England defender running past the injured Chris Smaling to side-foot the ball past David de Gea from close range.

"We were punished by our mistakes, "Mourinho told Sky Sports. "Childish loss of possession, so easy. Childish in their box and childish in our box.

"Half an hour after our second it is a game to finish four, five, six-one. We didn't win because we missed incredible chances, joke chances,"

Wasteful United's missed opportunity



This result was a huge blow to any hope United had of catching City, who had earlier beaten Bournemouth 4-0.

And former England striker Alan Shearer believes the title race is "as good as over".

Speaking on Match of the Day he said: "Manchester City have lost twice in 2017 in the Premier League, they will not lose five games in the second half of the season."

Mourinho made eight changes from the side that lost to Bristol City, with Paul Pogba returning from suspension to captain the team, while Victor Lindelof, making his fifth Premier League start, went to right-back in place of the injured Antonio Valencia.

The Swede and centre-back Phil Jones were badly exposed by Leicester's counter-attack for the Foxes' opener.

Wilfred Ndidi sprayed a 60-yard pass to Riyad Mahrez, who only had Smalling and De Gea for company.

Mata took both goals well and United were not helped by his substitution in 83 minutes

The Algerian held up the ball before sliding a clever pass to the arriving Vardy, who placed a low finish into the bottom corner for his 50th Premier League goal.

Mata equalised on 40 minutes with a precise finish, rolling the ball into the far corner from the middle of the box.

Lindelof blocked Christian Fuchs' goalbound effort after the break, while Martial missed a one-on-one with Kasper Schmeichel, blasting over from 12 yards.

Spanish midfielder Mata got his second on the hour mark, beating Schmeichel with curling a free-kick after Martial had been fouled on the edge of the box.

United dominated in the second half and the result should never have been in question with 19 attempts on goal in the match.

Lingard should have made it three when he hit the post after rounding Schmeichel, while the Dane also got his fingertips to the ball to stop substitute Marcus Rashford when also through on goal.

United failed to capitalise on Amartey's 73rd-minute sending off and Mourinho looked to shore up the lead instead of extending it, bringing on Ander Herrera for Lingard with 15 minutes left in the match.

"I don't get United," said Ex-England winger Chris Waddle on Radio 5 live. "They've had so many chances to really put this game beyond Leicester but they've messed about and missed chances."
