Nikola Vlasic failed to score in 12 Premier League matches for Everton after a £10m move from Hajduk Split
  • European champions Real Madrid fell to a surprise Champions League defeat by CSKA Moscow in Russia.
  • Nikola Vlasic scores only goal before Akinfeev’s late red
Toni Kroos gifted the hosts their goal in the second minute with a terrible backpass that was picked up by Nikola Vlasic, on loan from Everton, and he fired past Keylor Navas from just inside the penalty area.

Karim Benzema, Casemiro and Mariano hit the woodwork for Real, as the Spanish side, without the injured Gareth Bale, pushed for an equaliser.

CSKA goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was sent off four minutes into injury time for two yellow cards in quick succession for dissent.

Nevertheless, the hosts held on to move to the top of Group G above Real, who dropped down to second.

Roma beat Viktoria Plzen 5-0 in the other group game, but Real stay above them on head-to-head record courtesy of their 3-0 win over the Italian side two weeks ago.

Rapid Vlasic scores again - the stats
  • Nikola Vlasic's goal after 65 seconds is the fastest Real Madrid have conceded in the Champions League since March 2007 when Roy Makaay scored 10 seconds in for Bayern Munich, who won 2-1 in a last-16 second-leg match.
  • The reigning European champions have failed to score in three consecutive matches - following La Liga games against Sevilla and Atletico Madrid. This is the first time Real have not scored in three games since January 2007 under Fabio Capello.
  • This was CSKA Moscow's first win over Real Madrid in their third Champions League meeting. They also met in the last 16 of the 2011-12 tournament with Real winning 4-1 in the second leg after a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Moscow.
  • CSKA Moscow have avoided defeat in both of their opening two Champions League matches in a season for the first time since 2006-07.
  • Real Madrid have had 56 attempts on goal in their two Champions League games after 30 shots during the 3-0 win over Roma.
  • Real's 26 shots against CSKA Moscow was their most without scoring in a Champions League game since the start of 2003-04.
  • Nikola Vlasic followed up his 94th-minute goal against Viktoria Plzen in matchday one, with a goal inside two minutes against Real.

Spain leads European nations for new migrant arrivals in 2018 according to a new report from the International Organization for Migrants (IOM).

For the first time since Europe’s migrant crisis began in 2014, Spain has taken in more immigrants than either Greece or Italy, IOM reports. As of mid-July, Spain has taken in 18,016 migrants, compared to 17,827 in Italy and 14,678 in Greece.
IOM migrant arrivals 2018

As Breitbart News reported a week ago, Italy’s immigration figures have dropped dramatically in 2018, thanks in part to its new populist government, and numbers for the first half of the year reflect an 80 percent decline over the same period of 2017.

According to data released earlier this month by the United Nations immigration agency (UNHCR), a total of 16,919 migrants arrived by sea into Italy prior to July 8, whereas over the same period in 2017 a total of 85,197 migrants had arrived.

As both the UNHCR and IOM have observed, Mediterranean migrant deaths have also dropped in 2018, a logical consequence to having fewer migrants on the seas.

For the first half of 2018, sea deaths fell from 2,258 to less than half that, or 1,058, in the same six-month period. The decline in migrant sea deaths due to more restrictive immigration policies supports the argument that more stringent immigration regulation in these situations helps save lives, contrary to unsubstantiated arguments to the contrary.

The total number of migrants lost at sea reached its highest point in 2016, with 4,578 migrants determined to be either dead or missing. That year also marked the record number of migrants arriving across the Mediterranean onto Italian shores, a total of 181,436, UNHCR declared.

The noteworthy decline in migrant arrivals began with agreements made last summer between Italy and the Libyan coast guard to prevent NGOs from shuttling migrants from the coast of that nation to Italy and has been further augmented by the new populist government’s staunch stance against illegal immigration and its opposition to the infamous NGO “taxi service” from North Africa.

Spain’s new role as leader among European nations in international immigration reflects policies of Spain’s new prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, who offered to take in 629 migrants on board the rescue ship Aquarius last June, when both Italy and Malta refused to allow the vessel to dock in their ports.

Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Salvini, refused to allow the Aquarius to disembark its passengers at an Italian port, reversing standard Italian practice over the past several years.

Spain 1-1 Russia  (3-4 on penalties )Round of 16 World Cup match report

Hosts Russia pulled off the biggest shock of the 2018 World Cup so far as they beat 2010 winners Spain in the first penalty shootout of the tournament to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 48 years.

After extra-time ended with the score locked at 1-1, goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was Russia's penalty hero, denying Koke and then Iago Aspas to spark scenes of delirious celebration at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.

Igor Akinfeev was Russia's hero after saving two penalties in a shoot-out to sensationally dump Spain out of the World Cup and book the hosts a place in the quarter-finals after a 1-1 draw in Moscow.

Koke and Iago Aspas were denied by the Russia goalkeeper as 2010 champions Spain, who dominated possession without creating clear chances, were defeated 4-3 on penalties.

Sergei Ignashevich became the oldest scorer of an own goal in World Cup history when the 38-year-old gave Spain an early lead at the Luzhniki Stadium.

A right-wing Isco cross isolated Ignashevich and Sergio Ramos at the back post, the Russia defender turning the ball home via his heel as he desperately tried to block his opponent's run.

But Russia drew level in the 41st minute, Artem Dzyuba smashing home a penalty after his header was blocked by Gerard Pique's arm in the box.

A stodgy Spain could not break the hosts down and were denied a penalty following a VAR review in extra-time, sending the tie to a shoot-out.

Akinfeev saves the penalty from Koke
Akinfeev saved a terrible Koke penalty to put Russia in control and with David de Gea unable to stop any of the four kicks he faced, Aspas' effort was brilliantly blocked by the goalkeeper to spark chaotic celebrations.

'I accept responsibility' - what they said

Spain boss Fernando Hierro: "This is sad, it is the way it is. I'm not holding anything against anybody.

"Nevertheless I do accept responsibility and I don't avoid blame. We all tried to give it our best but that's football.
"I don't think you can talk about the team breaking down or collapsing. There's a fine line between winning and losing."
Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev: "We were hoping for penalties. We are having a fantastic World Cup. Not just our fans, but the fans of other countries are getting a sense of this atmosphere and understood that Russians really know how to play football and want to play football."

'1,006 passes but only one goal - and defeat' - the stats
  • Spain completed 1,006 passes in this match, only 21 fewer than Russia have completed in their four World Cup matches (1027).
  • Russia have reached the quarter-final of the World Cup for the first time since the breakup of the Soviet Union.
  • Spain have lost three of their four World Cup penalty shootouts (1986 v Belgium, 2002 v South Korea and in this match).
  • Artem Dzyuba has scored with all three of his shots on target at the 2018 World Cup.
  • Russia's veteran defender Sergei Ignashevich became the oldest player to score an own goal at the World Cup, aged 38 years and 352 days.
  • Including the penalty shootout in this match, Spain goalkeeper David De Gea made just one save in his four matches at the 2018 World Cup.
  • Although Spain led for 29 minutes and 52 seconds in the first half (between the 12th and 41st minutes), they did not attempt their first shot at goal until the 45th minute.
  • Sergio Ramos made his 17th appearance for Spain at the World Cup in this game, a record for an outfield Spanish player and equalling the overall record held by goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Summary
  • Ronaldo equalises late on with free-kick to complete 51st career hat-trick
  • His second goal came via De Gea howler
  • Costa double twice helped Spain come from behind
  • Nacho had put Spain 3-2 up with stunning drive
It was a night to remember for all concerned but not least for Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portugal captain smashing a hat-trick past Spain on Friday night to register in his fourth World Cup.

With six goals in 14 World Cup outings, Ronaldo becomes the fourth player to score in four separate tournaments, joining Pele, Miroslav Klose and Uwe Seeler in managing the feat.

The winger scored his first goal in Russia after just four minutes from the penalty spot.

Knocking the ball past Nacho, the defender brought him down and it was Ronaldo himself who dispatched the spot-kick and sent David De Gea the wrong way.

And the goalkeeper couldn't keep out a powerful effort on the verge of half time to make it 2-1 to Portugal at that point.

After two La Roja strikes, Ronaldo won a free-kick off Gerard Pique around 22 yards out and he stepped up to fire it over the wall and into the net with aplomb.
