Mohamed Salah scored 44 goals for Liverpool last season



Jurgen Klopp described Liverpool's emphatic victory over West Ham as "better than I could have expected" before warning his team face an "unbelievably hard" season.

Mohamed Salah's early goal set Liverpool on their way to their biggest opening home league win since 1932.

The Egyptian tapped in a 19th-minute opener from Andy Robertson's cross on his return to action for the Reds at Anfield.

"West Ham will play, for sure, a good season but they are not the Uniteds, the Citys," Klopp said. "We know that and we have to be ready week in, week out for all the challenges."

It took the visitors almost half an hour to fashion a chance of note as they struggled to stem the Liverpool attacking tide.

New Reds goalkeeper Alisson, signed for £66.8m from Roma in the summer, comfortably saved a Fabian Balbuena header, one of only two efforts on target for the Hammers.

As the pressure built, the hosts doubled their advantage when Sadio Mane turned in James Milner's cut-back after being left unmarked six yards from goal.

The Senegalese forward added his second and Liverpool's third early in the second period. Mane appeared marginally offside as he collected Roberto Firmino's pass, but the flag stayed down and he drilled his effort beyond new West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

New signing Naby Keita, a £50m acquisition from RB Leipzig, impressed in midfield for Jurgen Klopp's side.

He contributed to Liverpool's first goal and delivered the kind of driving performance that Steven Gerrard once produced wearing the number eight shirt.

Substitute Daniel Sturridge rounded off the scoring with his first touch, 24 seconds after coming on, to ensure Liverpool recorded their 500th victory in the Premier League era.

It also maintained their fine Anfield record against West Ham, who have now won just one of their past 46 top-flight visits.


 
Liverpool underline title credentials

Liverpool finished fourth last season, 25 points behind Premier League champions Manchester City.

However, the nature of their emphatic Champions League quarter-final victory over Pep Guardiola's side in April, coupled with a league win over City, suggested they could challenge them this term.

Liverpool's attacking prowess has not been in question in recent times.

The front three of Salah, Firmino and Mane contributed 91 of the club's 135 goals last season and they were on song again as Liverpool put four goals past West Ham for the fourth time in a row.

Salah's instinct to find the right position allowed him an easy first, while Mane's intelligence brought him off the wing into central positions for both his goals.

Klopp compared his team to "Rocky Balboa" in the build-up to this game but the depth of his substitutes' bench and this result may soon see them shed that tag.

The German introduced new signing Xherdan Shaqiri, England midfielder Jordan Henderson and Sturridge from the bench but still had midfielders Adam Lallana and Fabinho in reserve.

"The performance of all the boys and the midfield of James [Milner] and Georginio Wijnaldum was outstanding," Klopp added.

"We played as good as possible today and we extended a really good pre-season into the Premier League."

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola hailed the "incredible" numbers produced by his side as they reached 100 Premier League goals for the season with a 4-1 win at struggling West Ham.

The champions' emphatic victory at London Stadium left the Hammers in a precarious position above the relegation zone.

"The numbers are a consequence of what we have done," Guardiola said.

"We are so happy to be getting close to history. We will try to surpass the number of goals and points.

"We wanted to win today so that we can get the record of 96 points at home when we get the trophy in front of our people next week."
City - who are now on 93 points - took the lead when Leroy Sane's shot deflected off the head of Patrice Evra and wrong-footed Hammers goalkeeper Adrian.


A series of West Ham defensive mishaps culminated in a Pablo Zabaleta own goal which gave City a two-goal advantage and saw them reach the landmark century.


Aaron Cresswell gave the Hammers a foothold in the game shortly before the break when he curled home a free-kick inside Ederson's near post.


However, inspired by a brilliant performance from Raheem Sterling, City reasserted their control of the contest early in the second half.

Having earlier teed up Sane, Sterling claimed a hat-trick of assists after the break when he set up Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho to finish clinically from inside the box.

West Ham are three points clear of 18th-placed Southampton, who occupy the final relegation place.

West Ham kept City at bay for nearly an hour when the sides met at Etihad Stadium last December, as Guardiola's side came from behind to win 2-1.

In this encounter a slick City team possessed the creativity to open the Hammers up at will, with the home side's defenders left dazed and confused.

David Moyes' side did not help themselves with an error-strewn defensive display, epitomised by City's second goal, which bordered on slapstick.

Adrian rushed off his line but failed to win the ball, Angelo Ogbonna botched a headed clearance and then Declan Rice and Zabaleta contrived to put the ball into their own net.

West Ham had nine players in the penalty area yet still conceded.

Moyes, arms folded with a furrowed brow, cut a nervous figure on the touchline, aware of their position in the table.

"When we came in here, we were in the bottom three. We're not now. There are other teams who would rather be in our position," said the Scot.

"We are good enough to win another game at least and let's hope we can do that."

Hammers fans will also be tense, especially given this is the second 4-1 defeat in as many weeks to damage their goal difference.

West Ham (-23) have worse goal difference than relegation rivals Southampton (-19) and are only two better off than Swansea (-25).

With things so tight at the bottom of the table could it prove crucial in the final reckoning?

Javier Hernandez netted an equaliser for West Ham to thwart Chelsea again and dent their bid for Champions League football, while earning his side an important point in their bid to survive relegation in a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Former Manchester United striker Hernandez, on as a substitute, levelled things up 17 minutes from time, cancelling out Cesar Azpilicueta's first half opener.

For "Chicharito," the goal was the ninth in his career against Chelsea, the most he's scored against any opponent. The Mexico striker has scored in his last four league appearances at Stamford Bridge.

The draw leaves Chelsea in real danger of missing out on Champions League football for next season, with the champions 10 points behind Tottenham in fourth. West Ham, meanwhile, moved six points clear of the bottom three following a credible draw in a lively London derby.

Chelsea started the match with their Champions League hopes for next season in jeopardy, following a run of five defeats in seven. And a draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday was met with a chorus of boos from the home faithful.

West Ham had problems of their own, kicking off five points above the relegation zone and reeling from news Michail Antonio would miss the rest of the season through injury.

But the visitors started brightly, Marko Arnautovic finding space near the six-yard box before firing just wide via a deflection.
 


That stirred Chelsea into life, with Willian shooting over before Alvaro Morta put the ball through Joe Hart's legs, only to be ruled offside. Morata, who scored in last week's 3-1 defeat at home to Tottenham, then improvised brilliantly from Eden Hazard's cross but his flick trickled wide.

Man of the match Hart then spread himself superbly to deny Willian again but from the resulting corner, Azpilicueta profited from slack defending to prod home.

David Moyes, winless in 16 Premier League trips to Stamford Bridge, saw his side battle gamely but fail to create much of note and it should have got worse a minute after the break, but Willian screwed wide. Morata then had the ball in the net once again but was thwarted by the offside flag for the second time.

Chelsea were left to rue those missed opportunities on 73 minutes when Hernandez, on for Edimilson Fernandes three minutes earlier, met Arnautovic's pass to slot the ball past Thibaut Courtois.

Marcos Alonso thought he had put Chelsea back in front 11 minutes from time with a fierce effort but Hart's sensational stop denied him. The ball looked destined for the top corner but Hart stretched to tip it over the bar.

Arnautovic and West Ham wanted a penalty five minutes from time but replays showed N'Golo Kante made a fine tackle in the penalty area. And as Chelsea searched for the crucial victory, Hart was on hand once again to make a fine stop from Olivier Giroud's header in the final minutes.

Son Heung-min rescued a point for Spurs with six minutes left

Son Heung-min and Pedro Obiang scored two stunning long-range strikes as Tottenham drew with West Ham.

Obiang's 35-yard drive into the top corner was the first shot for David Moyes' Hammers at Wembley, with Spurs having had 20 by that stage.

The hosts dominated the game - both sides' second Premier League match in 48 hours - but were denied by a series of last-ditch blocks and saves.

But Son broke West Ham's resistance with a 30-yard strike beyond Adrian.



Hammers almost win with defensive masterclass

West Ham were without the injured Andy Carroll - who was on the bench - and Marko Arnautovic, so Moyes set his side up not to lose, a target they accomplished and very nearly bettered.

By the 70th minute they still had not had a touch in Spurs' penalty area, but then suddenly and entirely against the run of play they found themselves in front thanks to a goal-of-the-season contender.

Manuel Lanzini gave the ball to Obiang, who came in from the left channel and unleashed a thunderous effort past the helpless Hugo Lloris to register only his third goal for the club.

After Spurs levelled through Son's equally sublime strike, West Ham's defensive resolve was summed up in injury time when Victor Wanyama, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Son all had shots blocked in the space of 30 seconds.

Son said after the game that he thought "Obiang's goal was better".

"The strike was unbelievable," he added. "We have the best goalkeeper in the world and he can't do anything. It was a great strike."

Danny Welbeck celebrates making the breakthrough just before half time

Manager Arsene Wenger says Arsenal cannot afford further injuries over the busy Christmas period after striker Olivier Giroud suffered a hamstring problem in their Carabao Cup quarter-final win over West Ham.

Wenger, who made 11 changes from the weekend triumph over Newcastle, saw his side struggle to break down the defensively resolute visitors in the first half.

But England forward Danny Welbeck broke West Ham's resistance just before the break, turning in Mathieu Debuchy's header across goal as the hosts stayed on course for a first League Cup win since 1993.

The Gunners' night was soured by the loss of Giroud to an injury that could rule him out for three weeks, while Francis Coquelin also limped out of the match late on.

With Arsenal embarking on a run of 10 games in 36 days, Wenger admitted the loss of Giroud had come as a blow.

"It is very demanding, especially because we already have a tough schedule behind us," he said. "We have to sit down and analyse what we can do.

"What is very worrying is when you start to lose players, like Giroud tonight. After, you cannot afford to lose another one. I have to look how I can manage the schedule.
"When you look at our fixtures in January and February, you cannot imagine we will always play with the same players in every game.

"Will I change from Premier League game to Premier League or only in the Carabao Cup? I don't know yet - I have to look at the fixtures to see what I do."

West Ham boss David Moyes also named a much-changed side but they failed to click in attack, with the belated introductions of Andy Carroll, Diafra Sakho and Marko Arnautovic unable to undo the home defence.

Neither Joe Hart, restored to the West Ham side for the rested Adrian, nor Arsenal's second-choice goalkeeper David Ospina were forced into much action in what was a disjointed contest.

Moyes' side had been content to sit back and try to catch Arsenal on the counter during a low-quality first half, but even with the attacking changes they could not muster a single shot on target.

West Ham manager David Moyes said he is "really enjoying" life with the Hammers after his side earned a valuable point in their fight against relegation by holding Arsenal.

The Gunners are without a Premier League win in three games and are now down to seventh in the table as West Ham continued their revival under new manager Moyes.

They followed up Saturday's win over champions Chelsea by holding Arsene Wenger's side at London Stadium.

"There's a good spirit at the moment, they're all at it together," said Moyes, whose side remain in the relegation places but are level on points with Crystal Palace and West Brom, who are above the drop zone on goal difference.

"I want them to be more robust and we're still a bit easy to play against. We're trying to improve that and we want to make our football better.

"There's a lot to improve but the first thing was to stop conceding goals. I'm really enjoying it here."

Arsenal's Nigeria forward Alex Iwobi struck the outside of Adrian's post as Wenger's side failed to score in the Premier League for the first time in three months.

West Ham also hit the woodwork in the closing stages through substitute Javier Hernandez after the Gunners failed to clear.

Arsenal could have climbed to fourth with a win, but the draw leaves them a point behind Tottenham, who are in the final Champions League place.

"There's always concern about the table as we are here to win games," said Wenger.

"We had so much of the ball, but it was very frustrating because we could even have lost it at the end."

West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic scored his first goal for eight months

West Ham won for the first time under David Moyes as Marko Arnautovic's first goal for the club proved enough to beat a disjointed Chelsea at London Stadium.

The Hammers scored the only goal after just six minutes when Arnautovic curled a deft strike into the bottom corner after exchanging passes with Manuel Lanzini on the edge of the area.

Chelsea responded well before the break but were repelled by an organised West Ham defence and two solid saves from Adrian, retaining his spot in place of the dropped Joe Hart.

Both sides became increasingly ragged in the second half but West Ham desperately held on, with Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata firing wide when clean through late on.

Despite victory, the hosts remain in the bottom three, though they have drawn level on points with 17th-placed West Brom, who face fellow strugglers Swansea at 15:00 GMT.

Defeat means champions Chelsea will finish the weekend 14 points behind leaders Manchester City if Pep Guardiola's side beat rivals Manchester United on Sunday.


The Moyes revival

Having ultimately failed to hang on in a vastly improved performance against Manchester City last weekend, West Ham took the next step in proving they could be revitalised under Moyes by this time beating superior opposition.

Their new endeavour was epitomised by Arnautovic, the often frustrating Austria international exchanging positions with his fellow forwards to routinely test Chelsea's defence.

When makeshift centre-forward Michail Antonio drifted out right early on, Arnautovic cleverly moved inside, collecting Antonio's pass and playing a quick one-two with Lanzini to leave Andreas Christensen behind, before calmly finishing low past Thibaut Courtois.

He remained a threat even when West Ham dropped deeper and was denied a decent penalty shout when he tried to go past Christensen and the ball hit the Danish defender's outstretched hand.

At the other end, the Hammers showed greater resolve in defence, largely due to Moyes' organisation of the central back three and wing backs, with Arthur Masuaku particularly impressive down the left flank.

It could also be a result of Adrian's more measured presence in goal, exuding more calm to his defence perhaps than the erratic Hart, who could not play against his parent club last week and has now lost his place.

"I have two really good goalkeepers - Joe's professionalism when I told him he wasn't playing was excellent, Adrian has done well again and kept the clean sheet so we're happy," said Moyes.

Whatever the main reason, Moyes will surely stick with Adrian going forward and England's number one Hart could find himself short of first-team football before next summer's World Cup.

The next test for West Ham is to replicate these performances against the teams around them and drag themselves away from danger.
